All About Lily Chou-Chou Directed by Shunji Iwai, this is the story of Yuichi, a 14 year old Japanese boy in the rural area of,. Just about as quiet and introverted as anyone could imagine, he passes his days never making a connection or even speaking to anyone. Set before a backdrop of cruelty and psychical abuse at school, Yuichi’s only interests are Kuno, a beautiful talented schoolmate, and, an alternative rock star with a huge underground fan following. For Yuichi there are two worlds that exist simultaneously – school, where he is beaten and harassed by his schoolmates, and the ether (the Internet), where he is known as philia, the site manager of fan for Lily. Yuichi’s life is meaningless and controlled by other people; he is in a downward spiral towards killing himself. The main tension is whether Yuichi manages to become free, or does he surrender and kill himself. Apr 11, 2006 All About Lily Chou-Chou movie opening. 'A ll About Lily Chou-Chou' is like an ancient text that requires modern commentary. It's not an old film (it's cutting edge Japanese techno-angst) but it's so. One hopes that Yuichi finally does stand up for himself and becomes free. But one fears though, that Yuichi might just kill himself, just as he confesses to his online friend Blue Cat. The stakes are high; it is nothing short of life of death for this boy in angst and pain of teenage life, and there is real risk that Yuichi might not make it. The film revolves around the theme of coming of age in a cruel world where sincerity is lost and good natured, intelligent, and initially well intentioned children are changed by their experiences in the society into bullying manipulative controlling abusive adults. This happens in an environment where the Internet is the only solace for these young people of whom many can feel the Ether. Lily Chou-Chou the rock star IS the Ether personified. She liberates our thoughts, she sublimates and transcends, reaching the transparent beyond, as put by one of the boys. This is a film about looking for salvation and sanctuary, a feeling of true love and devotion to some transcendental beauty. At odds with their nihilistic aimless lives these children try to escape their pain on the Internet. This film is about the contemporary postmodern age of the Internet where everybody is connected but feels more and more disconnected from their daily lives. The theme is woven into the film by presenting people in a real and recognizable way that is understandable for anybody. Here is a boy who is about to become an adult. He feels the existential void and lack of meaning that many have felt. We see how young people struggle to become adults; the tensions and sacrifices one makes; sometimes one kills something in oneself. In that sense Yuichi just wants to have a sense of belonging. But to do that Yuichi needs to be free and decide for himself. Throughout the story he is constantly changing and becoming more like an adult. But he is also on a downward spiral towards becoming more and more disconnected and resigned from his own being. At one point he has lost himself and the ideals that he values to such a degree that he just gives up and begins to do what Hoshino tells him to do, including crime. On the surface Hoshino only wants power and control. But deep inside him Hoshino really needs to punish the people he knows for not being such as he wants them to be, for not understanding him, for hurting him so much. He is as broken as Yuichi, and like Yuichi, he too is constantly changing throughout the story. His change perhaps is one of the most important narrative arches of the whole film. He is the one who starts out as a benign good natured boy but after his meeting with death and adulthood he becomes increasingly violent and manipulative. The main protagonist Yuichi just wants to belong, and be loved unconditionally but he doesn’t know what he has to do to get it. As this is something inherently human any viewer will automatically connect with these feelings. Moreover, as this is a true film of the Internet age, any contemporary teen growing up in society that is increasingly virtualized, will have a good understanding of what Yuichi is experiencing. The film opens with Yuichi standing alone head down on a large rice field with his headphones on, seemingly cut off from all the rest of the world. The scene feels ethereal and one can imagine oneself standing there as him with the headphones on caring about nothing and everything at the same time. The camera angle is such that you are totally submerged in the scene; you see no future and are entirely focused on the boy and his inner world, so far from everything and everybody else. This is a great introductory scene because it establishes what the boy feels like, and where he is in his life. The green rice fields look beautiful and they have a transcendental quality, as does the music and moreover, they are also instantly recognized inherently as Japanese. We understand from the virtual chat room imposed on the scene that Lily was born at the exact moment Mark Chapman killed, and both of them were from a place of eternal peace – the ether. Starting off with that scene showing the subtitles from a chat room in between has the effect of suggesting that the ether is everywhere. It is an opening shot into a world where the Ether (the Internet) has become so intertwined with reality it is more like virtualized meta reality that is always present. The ethereal poetic sweet hypnotic music of Lily Chou-Chou asserts that feeling just as do the green rice fields and the mesmerized boy standing there. The film ends with a final sequence during the titles where everything is the same as in the first sequence of the film. There is the field and Yuichi is standing on the field, there are the people are writing in the chat room. But this time everybody is there, Yuichi, Hoshino and Tsuda. One can only guess who is writing what, who is who in the chat room – but it is clear they are all in the chat room. The last post in the chat room that ends the film perhaps summarizes everything – Maybe I’m writing this because I want to scream out – I’m here! The final scene has the effect of generalizing the experiences of Yuichi and applying to the whole Japanese youth, or perhaps even to contemporary everywhere in general. Now it is revealed very directly that many of the young people had similar feelings, and they were yearning for the same things. Perhaps this is the simplest scene of the whole film. The structure of the film is seems disorganized and sometimes hard to follow, but it is perhaps surprising that it does however fit very well into the traditional theories of narrative analysis. First of all, the film is non-linear, and in terms of timeline, the central part is first, then comes the first part, and then finally the last part comes – last. The nature of the structure is such that the whole resembles the messages that are sent over the chat. The narrative doesn’t at first appear trough a traditional linear use of a storyline, but is rather expressed trough a sort of an osmosis that gets trough ones skin. By using a not so common structure and a discontinuous timeline the film emphasizes the feeling of disconnectedness and the feeling of being lost and unknown, anonymous. The story arch begins at an ‘inciting incident’ during a summer holiday, where Hoshino has a, he almost drowns. However because of the disconnected nature of editing this scene is only shown at the middle of the film. Interestingly, the first plot point, the event that thrusts the plot in a new direction is purely a trick of editing. After the first act which shows the status quo of the horrible life of Yuichi, the viewer is thrust back into the past. This is initiated by the climax of the first act where Yuichi gets beaten up by Hoshino and the gang. In essence it is a situation that Yuichi is forced into, but he also makes the unconscious decision of allowing Hoshino to do this to him. The second act that transports us back into history shows how all of this came to pass. Even though set in a strange place in the structure, the second act makes use of traditional narrative techniques and builds up action trough the death of a lonely bystander. Already there are expectations and an eerie feeling that something bad is about to happen. And then Hoshino almost dies. From that summer on everything is different. Back at school we see that Hoshino has changed, he has become violent and attack another boy (this is the culmination). The second plot point arrives when at the end of the second act Yuichi says in the chat ‘From that day on, the world was gray’. Act three has the same tension as the first act. The midpoint of the story arrives not in the middle but shortly after the second plot point; Yuichi is standing on the field just as in the first scene of the film, depressed and listening to music; the field is a central symbol of the film. The final climax arrives when Yuichi stabs Hoshino after Lily’s concert. In order to understand the film more fully it is helpful to divide the narrative into sequences based on some or other criteria. The simplest way to do this is by division into three acts because the film naturally falls into the structure present, past, present. In the first act Yuichi enters high school; he is shy and quiet, ridiculed by others. Hoshino is bullying him and his schoolmates. In the second act there is a flashback into the past, to junior high school and summer vacation. Yuichi and Hoshino are still good friends. But during the summer vacation Hoshino has a near death experience and he almost drowns. In the third act which switches back to the present, Hoshino is getting more abusive; finally Yuichi kills Hoshino. A three act analysis to a great extent does not reveal the detail and dynamics of the narrative so a division into eight sequences as recommended by Frank Daniel goes that much further into explaining how the story really happens. It is remarkable that the dynamics of a narrative that Daniel suggests, and which at first viewing may seem quite abstract, actually fit the storyline of this film quite well. In the first sequence which describes the status quo we are introduced to Yuichi, a 14 year old high school student in rural Japan. Yuichi (also known as Philia on the Internet chat room he runs) is alone on a field listening to music and is feeling very depressed. Another day Yuichi and gang of boys steal music from a shop. Yuichi’s mother thinks he is a good boy. We are introduced to Yuichi’s family: little brother, mother, her boyfriend; Yuichi will have to change his name because mother is pregnant. Chat room; Blue Cat enters for the first time; Yuichi welcomes her/him, introduces the rule of ‘this is a free zone for everybody who loves Lily’. The gang calls him out, Yuichi meets a familiar who gives him money – but the other boy takes it. Chat room: new Lily album is out. Yuichi goes to a shop to steal it; gets caught. Teacher comes a saves him. In the second sequence which raises the problem we are introduced to Kuno, the girl Yuichi likes, and the school. Yuichi’s mother is disappointed in his son because ‘stealing is stealing’. At home Yuichi is on his bed phasing out with music doing nothing. He goes out when Hoshino calls him, and is beat up by the guys. He is made publicly masturbate, and thrown with stones. In the third sequence where there is raising action we are transported back in time to the day when high school begins. It is 1999, and Yuichi is 13 years old. Hoshino was the best student of his school, and class president at Ayu Elementary. Yuichi and Hoshino are good friends, spend a lot of time together; t hey both do Kendo. Hoshino is smart, the best student, and the best athlete. Back at Hoshino’s home they look at the stars, and Hoshino explains how nobody understands him; that night Yuichi is first introduced to Lily Chou-Chou. Summer vacation 1999 Hoshino, Yuichi, and friends steal money to go to Okinawa Island. There are girls, and they have fun on the beach. A very happy man seems to keep dropping in; he says it’s his fourth time there and he loves it for the nature. The same day they find the happy man on the road – he had jumped in front of a bus and killed himself. The next day out on the beach Hoshino goes swimming and almost drowns. On their way back Hoshino throws the money they stole into the sea. In the fourth sequence where the first culmination happens the boys go back to school on the 1 st September 1999. On chat: References to Nostradamus, and the Matrix; humanity died and from that day on the world was grey. At school another boy Inubushi is bullying their classmates and Hoshino stands up and attacks him, throws him on the ground and cuts off his hair; after school he and the gang punish and abuse him by making him swim naked in a puddle, letting him fetch things with his teeth crawling in the mud. This is the first culmination; we see that Hoshino is no longer the same. Hoshino starts to smoke, quits the Kendo club. Year 2000 arrives, Yuichi is 14 years old. The age of gray: year 2000 starts with the same scene as the whole movie with Yuichi standing alone on the rice field. Hoshino forces a girl named Tsuda in Yuichi’s class into prostitution; she has to sleep with older men, and Yuichi is forced to follow her and collect the money; she gets a small cut. On their way home there is a very emotional sequence – she throws the money at Yuichi and looks very frustrated and sad; then she runs into nearby creek mesmerized by her feelings. Finally at home she cleans herself with the garden hose as if trying to wash her clean of what had had happened. On chat: someone says “For me only Lily is real. For me, only the Ether is proof that I’m alive’. In the fifth sequence which is an emotionally slower episode shifts the focus on another character. The class is going to take part in a choir competition but the girl who was voted to play the piano cannot do it properly. Kuno is an excellent pianist but the other girls don’t like her start bullying her to step down. Kuno changes the arrangement so they can go a capella and won’t need a piano. In the competition the choir sings while Kuno just has to stand by with her head down. The others have totally ostracized her. In the sixth sequence where the second culmination happens Yuichi allows Hoshino to arrange Kuno to be raped. While this happens other girls are watching and laughing, and Yuichi is crying – this is the culmination of how far Yuichi and Hoshino have come in comparison with when they were still friends. Now Yuichi is a droid, and Hoshino has become bitter and uncaring. Another day Yuichi and Tsuda meet after she had slept with an older man. She steals some money from him and now she’s happy and they go out to eat. It now seems Tsuda has started to like the money she gets for sleeping with the old men; she doesn’t care anymore whether this is good or bad; like Yuichi and Hoshino she has also changed. On the way home Yuichi gives her a CD with Lily Chou-Chou’s first album, which was the most influential on him. In the seventh sequence where the false resolution is revealed Yuichi tells Blue Cat in the chat room he has felt like dying many times, but he couldn’t. Blue cat tells him he or she understands that pain. We see Hoshino standing on a field listening to music; we understand that he is Blue Cat. We see Tsuda walking on a field looking at kites flying. Tsuda kills herself because she wants to feel what it is like to fly like a kite. Then Yuichi throws up in class. In a hospital lying on a bed he describes this noise he has in his head. And finally in the eighth sequence where the true resolution is revealed Lily Chou-Chou is playing live in Tokyo, it’s December 8, year 2000. Hoshino throws away Yuichi’s ticket so he cannot go to the concert; one of the most heartbreaking scenes is when Yuichi is standing there alone staring at a blank screen. After the concert is over and everybody is coming out Hoshino comes and pats Yuichi on the back. Yuichi starts to scream in the middle of the crowd and everyone starts running. Yuichi stabs Hoshino and he falls on the ground; his death is the true resolution. Now Yuichi can begin his life again; at home he starts to try and learn to play the piano, and dyes his hair. Kuno can play the piano in an orchestra. The last scene shows all of the characters, Yuichi, Hoshino, Tsuda on the field – it is clear they have all had a similar experience. In terms of editing there are some general things that jump out to the viewer right away. While the film has some long scenes and the overall rhythm is dreamy and quite slow, jump cuts are sometimes used because they create a sense of reality and also – an air of ‘I don’t care about anything’ that is very necessary in order to establish that particular environment for the characters. Also, in some scenes the film has the look and the feel of a music video. Often scenes are cut to the rhythm of the music, which is necessary in order to show that deep connection young people make to the music they listen to, and how much it influences them. This is why rhythmical editing plays such an important part in conveying the feel of the film. There are many example of spatial editing. For one, at 00:08:50 there is a three shot of TV hosts on a screen; next cut is to a close up of one of the hosts. Secondly, at 01:22:35 there is a close up of Tsuda in the water. And then next there is wide shot of both Tsuda in the water and Yuichi on the embankment – a classical spatial shot. There are also many examples of temporal editing. Just to name one, at 00:05:28 while in the train the boys carry a stolen bag which they took from an older gentleman; the next cut is to a roadside where the bag is lying on the ground. This edit makes use of both temporal and graphical techniques at the same time. Graphical editing is used in conjunction with other types of editing to also match the shots by a certain graphical element. Logical editing is frequently used in places where no attention is paid to the traditional grammar of camerawork. The film also has examples of the question and answer pattern. In some sequences of the film frequently cuts to the chat room. The question is posed with the image, and the answer is given by words in the chat. Moreover this allows one to use the chat a cutaway to switch between shots. In most sequences the 180 rule is followed as they are shot in a more or less in a traditional style. There are some exceptions though. On 00:06:03 the boys are in a store running out of a store (camera pans left to right); then there is a rule-breaking cut to the store clerk who looks like he’s coming from the right; and then he runs into the frame from the left. This doesn’t seem to have any intentional effect, and perhaps was just sloppy camerawork. Some of the handheld shots are long without any cuts which mean that editing rules do not apply. In one scene a bus leaves the scenes to the right, then there is a cutaway to the chat, and the bus enters again from the right, which is slightly confusing. There are also some special editing techniques that one could talk about. For one, the entire film is shot handheld, and if not, the shots are still framed in a dynamic and are never entirely static. Moreover, there are some scenes that show inventive use of camera angles. For example at 00:18:35 there is a corridor situation with two people walking towards the camera. A third person is walking to meet them. Then instead of cutting 180 degrees from the two shot to face the coming person, it is filmed in one continuous shot turning the camera half a circle; the third person stops. Only then there is a cut from behind of the two and we see all three of them walking away from t he camera. Although All about Lily Chou-Chou features a non-traditional narrative style, it still manages to follow some of the basic rules of storytelling, and more importantly – it creates a compelling story that keeps tension and interest until the end. In terms of editing the film is dynamic and youthful, and appeals to the senses of a young and pop-culturized but sophisticated audience. Editing Assignment This article was first published on May 14, 2008 for Editing Class at Baltic Film & Media ∎ © The Narrative by Kris Haamer 2017. All About Lily Chou-Chou follows two childhood friends, Shusuke Hoshino and Yuichi Hasumi, from the end of their junior high school run until the beginning of high school. The film has a discontinuous storyline, starting midway through the story, just after high school begins, then flashes back to junior high and summer vacation, and then skips back to the present. In junior high, Hoshino was the best student in school, but was picked on by his classmates. He was skilled at kendo, and had an attractive young mother. Yuichi, on the other hand, was a quieter boy who fell in love with the music of the odd musician Lily Chou-Chou. During a group trip to Okinawa, Hoshino had a traumatic near-death experience and his personality changed from good-natured to dangerous and manipulative. In high school, he takes his place as class bully and shows his newfound power by ruining the lives of his classmates. This can't go on, I am too weak to take all these. It isn't fair, the way such controversial scenes are filmed so brilliantly. This is torture, I tell you. All About Lily Chou-Chou invites you inside then violently pushes you away, the magnetic combination of music and scenery draws you to approach closer and closer, then punishes you for doing so. My heart was tugged from all directions. It's tearing me apart. To put it simply, Lily Chou-Chou tells a tragic story about friendship and betrayal. Due to the discontinuous timeline, I find it hard to grasp fully what was actually going on, and at this point, I'm just too afraid to endure it •. All About Lily Chou-Chou is a movie about two childhood friends who drift apart. No, actually, it's much more than that, it's a story about growing up, about solitude, about the meaning of life, about the ether that glues us all together, being that music or the power of our actions and how they affect others around us. Essentially, the search for our own identity and how two completely different persons can merge their real, free personalities to the point of no distinction. The amazing soundtrack, the beautiful cinematography and the phrases that pop on screen, conversations about real feelings, help to the melancholic feeling of All About Lily Chou-Chou. And one thing the kids really got right: the songs we hear throughout the film are really ethereal. Film #8 in the: Japan All About Lily Chou-Chou is probably one of the most depressing films that I've ever seen. Everything in it feels so real, thanks to the handheld digital cinematography, and because of this all of the characters become incredibly dynamic and sympathetic. This is a film with a lot of pathos, and the film is carried by its great cast of characters and its incredibly dark and melancholic story. The film follows a couple of kids during their formative years and how the consequences of their choices affects those around them. All of this is presented in the framing device of a conversation in an internet chatroom devoted to discussing the music of •. Maybe there's something inherently garbage about these films that are so devoted to cruelty--this one is definitely devoid of a bride for rip van winkle's scope of hope but some of us are weak hoes and if there's a sense of euphoria that develops from the suffering then that diverse display of humanity usually has me justifying the means. In one scene a character who has been trafficked into selling her body stumbles upon a group of men flying kites and she has a go of flying them herself and the scene is FILLED WITH ETHER and crushed me with happiness, but iwai does something kind of annoying around this part of the film and with an interspersed snippet of •. Contents • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Gameplay [ ] There are three campaigns in the game, one for each race/faction (the, the and the Colonial Marines), that, while separate in terms of individual plot and gameplay, form one overarching storyline. Following the storyline of the campaign modes comes the multiplayer aspect of the game. In this Multiplayer section of the game, players face off in various game types in various ways. Predators [ ] As in the films, the Predator prefers to stalk its prey from the safety of treetops and the gameplay reflects this, the player leaping from branch to branch automatically with the help of a 'focus jumping' game mechanic. The Predator has different vision modes, the most recognizable from the films being a scanner, but the player also has different vision modes for spotting Aliens (only accessible from a special mask the player picks up in-game) and viewing the world normally. For example, the Heat Vision mode allows the player to see marines very clearly, while it renders Aliens nearly invisible; the Alien vision works in reverse, making aliens appear clearly and marines nearly invisible. Regular vision allows one to see the environment and other predators better than the former two visions, making battles between two or all three species a tactical juggle to prioritize enemies based on their threat to the player. The Predator’s gameplay is more based on stealth and tactics than the average first-person shooter. The player has to be aware of Aliens, which have the ability to see through a Predator's, that may climb up a tree and attack from below as well as taking care not to reveal themselves to marines too early as the marines’ weaponry and numbers are more than a match for the Predator. For long-range weaponry, the Predator can use a in addition to a -like and a combi stick (or throwing spear). For close-range combat, the Predator has four retractable on its arms. The wristblades allow for the Predator to perform a 'trophy kill,' a nod to the movies in which the Predators take trophies, usually skulls, from their defeated enemies to show their prowess in the hunt. OXM labeled the trophy kill mechanic as 'spectacularly violent' and it has been partially censored to avoid an Adults Only rating in the as it was 'several measures more graphic' than any other recent games. There are several animations, one of which is a 'terrified' marine dragged into the center of the screen by his or her throat, which the Predator then snaps effortlessly with the accompanying sound of 'someone biting into raw celery'. The neck broken, the Predator the marine, a 'sizeable portion' of the following. Even after this, the marine is still alive for a short period of time, 'gasping his last, with nothing but bloodied, glistening beneath his chin.' A screenshot showing a player being attacked by a group of Aliens Jason Kingsley, the of Rebellion, defended the brutality of the trophy-kill system, stating 'This is obviously a game based on adult-rated movies, and we want to make sure it’s very clearly an adult-rated game. It's an issue for me; some computer games are for kids– we're not making a computer game here for anyone other than adults. That's very clear and within that context, I think the violence is part of the character and the world– so we're talking about a fantasy world here and fantasy creatures and we're talking about trying to build up a mythos. I remember the first time I saw it, one of the particular Predator kills, everyone went 'Oooh'. But it's what the Predator does in the movies.' The Predator campaign explains how their species considers the war tactics of the human Marines juvenile. A quote from the intro states: 'We are old, my brother. Our race is few and scattered. Our ancestry lost to myth. The humans are still children, creatures of desire and hubris, with no comprehension of the long hunt. Still, they make good sport. They have discovered a trophy long locked away. They must not be allowed to find the crucible that spawned our most respected prey. If they succeed, all life will succumb to the crawling dark.' Aliens [ ] Aliens fight in close-quarters with their claws and tails, getting as close as possible to their prey as quickly as possible. Aliens have the ability to climb walls and jump from distances without much effort, and can blend in with shadows, using darkness to their advantage. Within limited ranges, aliens can seek out prey through walls. These senses also allow Aliens to clearly observe cloaked Predators. In the single player campaign, players will have the opportunity to harvest 'hosts'. By pinning the host, nearby facehuggers are able to locate and latch on to them, thereby propagating the Hive. Throughout the game, the player also has the opportunity to perform 'stealth kills'. Colonial Marines [ ] The Colonial Marine campaign is far closer to that of a standard first-person shooter. Marines carry a wide arsenal including, flamethrowers, and auto-tracking. To help navigate the surroundings, marines are equipped with shoulder-mounted lamps, surveying flares to briefly illuminate darkened areas, and motion trackers, capable of providing info on hostile positioning as they move. Plot [ ] Marine [ ] As a Marine, the game starts out above the planet, with the Marines squads on two separate ships, one of which is identified as the USS Marlow. The Marines have been given orders for a combat drop. When the Predators' ship comes out of cloak and destroys the Marlow, Major Van Zandt directs the surviving shuttle to land. The player Marine, dubbed 'Rookie', is knocked out during the drop, and regains consciousness in the heart of the chaos itself. At Corporal Tequila's direction, Rookie is sent into several parts of the wrecked human colony with the purpose of getting systems back online and locating all the surviving Marines, especially Major Van Zandt. However, the Major is discovered cocooned, forcing Rookie to shoot him. Moving further into the newly established hive within the refinery, Rookie encounters the Matriarch, an Alien queen, and sets her on fire, ultimately killing her in an explosion with help from Tequila. Going through the swamp, Rookie is contacted by Tequila, on board a drop ship to pick him up, but the ship comes under fire from a Predator and crashes before the rescue can be made. The now-stranded Rookie receives the assistance of the colony's administrator, Katya, from the Weyland–Yutani group, that was originally sent to investigate the pyramid. Following Katya's instruction, Rookie is able to locate other survivors throughout the ruins and fights and kills a Predator before finally rescuing Tequila in the Alien hive, but not before she has been implanted with a. Tequila asks the Rookie to shoot her, but Katya informs him that if the Rookie could get Tequila to the research lab, Katya could perform surgery on Tequila to extract the alien inside her. Weyland finds out about this during the procedure and cuts off the power to prevent Katya from trying to remove the alien from Tequila. Rookie is forced to put her into a stasis capsule to prevent the alien from 'bursting' and killing her. With their dropship and the Marlow destroyed, Rookie is informed by Katya, after finding out that she was an android, that Weyland has a datapad that can contact his personal dropship and get them off the planet. Meanwhile, Katya successfully removes the implanted chestburster from Col. Tequila's body with the aid of a backup generator. Rookie goes below the facility to confront Weyland, in order to acquire his datapad, and uses it to recall Weyland's dropship, getting himself, Tequila, and Katya off the planet and in the process revealing the Weyland who was on the planet was an android the entire time. Rookie, Tequila, and Katya are then seen in cryo-sleep on board the dropship while it's traveling to Weyland's personal cruiser, which is in orbit around the planet, while the pilot uploads the datapad's contents to the cruiser's computer. An older-looking Weyland is then delighted to learn that a 'live specimen' is secure, and to receive the vital contents of the datapad: the coordinates to the Xenomorph homeworld. Alien [ ] As an Alien, the game begins in a laboratory, where two humans are being kept imprisoned. As one of them wakes up, a chestburster emerges from the other, killing him. Soon after, a chestbuster breaks through the other's body, killing him as well. As scientists enter the room to collect the specimens, they find that 'Specimen 6' is missing. The missing chestburster then emerges from the second victim's mouth, rather than the containment tube, and, as a result, the room is gassed by head scientist Dr. Groves, killing the two other scientists and subduing the chestburster; however, Mr. Weyland prevents the death of the creature, impressed with the chestburster's cunning, and tells Groves to assign the creature to a special program, the alien code-named 'Specimen 6'. Days later, Specimen 6 is fully grown. During an observation of its abilities, it is told by its, the, which is also imprisoned, to escape, but is gassed and recaptured. As Weyland opens the door to the ancient ruins built by the Predators' ancestors, the structure emits an that disables the local human colony's systems, also disabling Specimen 6's restraints, allowing it to escape. Specimen 6 releases the other captive Aliens and the Matriarch. Once free, the Aliens retreat to the colony and the nearby refinery, where they begin to multiply through. The Matriarch establishes a hive in the refinery and the Aliens become dormant, until the arrival of the Colonial Marines. After the Marines arrive, Specimen 6 begins to kill off Marines and disable the colony's systems. While on its mission, it eventually finds itself at the ruins Weyland opened, where it and the other Aliens encounter a duo of Predators that they immediately kill. At the end of the fight, an Elite Predator appears and battles Specimen 6, who weakens it to the point that a Facehugger is able to attach itself to the face of the Elite Predator. As Specimen 6 returns to the Hive through the jungle, it stops and is mentally stunned as it sees the refinery is on fire, and senses that the Matriarch is trapped in the fire, set by the Marine 'Rookie' (as seen in the Marine Campaign), and died in an explosion. As the alien begins to undergo strange effects, Weyland and a few combat androids discover Specimen 6, and at Weyland's request, they capture it. They take the captured Specimen 6 off-world to an orbiting ship, where it kills the crew. It is shown that Specimen 6 escaped and began to build a hive in the ventilation system. It is then shown that Specimen 6 has metamorphosed into a praetorian and is in the process of molting its newly formed chrysalis to become a new queen. Predator [ ] As a Predator, the game starts in the jungles, where a youngblood is proving himself strong and fit enough for the rank of Elite. Once the trials are complete, the Elite, named 'Dark', is dispatched with a group of other Predators to a planet in order to investigate a distress call, sent by a youngblood hunting party on another planet (BG 386). On arriving at BG 386, the Predators destroy the orbiting Marine ship, the USS Marlow, and launch the Elites onto the planet's surface. On the planet, Dark finds one of the dead Youngbloods, and sets his wrist bracer to self-destruct in order to keep the humans from discovering their technology. Dark is then told to make trophies of the Marines, on account of their intrusion on the planet, and therefore, sacred hunting grounds for. He goes on to infiltrate the Colonial Marines' forward base in the colony, disabling the systems and releasing the Xenomorphs into the open. Dark infiltrates the Refinery, and finds the Alien queen already killed by Rookie, the Marine from the Marine campaign. He enters the ruins after escaping the refinery and finds the mask of an ancient and legendary Predator. Replacing his own with this mask, Dark gains the ability to see and target Aliens in the dark as well as holes and crevices from where they can hide. The mask plays back holographic scenes from many years back celebrating the Predators' first victory over the Aliens. It is at this point the player is instructed to find a certain artifact of high importance to the Predators – an ancient wrist bracer. Venturing through the ruins, Dark finds stranded Colonial Marines and more Aliens. Reaching an ancient combat arena, the Elite battles a Praetorian. When the Praetorian is defeated, Dark acquires an ancient combi-stick, a spear-like weapon that can be thrown while maintaining the thrower's cloaking. The Elite then infiltrates the research lab Weyland–Yutani built above the Predators' pyramid and searches for the wrist bracer stolen by the colonists for research. Dark has his first encounter with corporate combat androids. Weyland attempts to capture the Elite for live experimentation, but fails. The Elite acquires the wrist bracer, and after battling through the Xenomorph labs and the queen's former chamber, makes it to the pyramid, activates the self-destruct sequence to his wrist bracer before battling & killing a, which was born from the previous Elite Predator in the Alien campaign. He is then informed the wrist bracer is to be used to wipe out the entire temple and the colony around it, as the temple's sanctity had been violated by the humans, and to purge the stain on the Predators' history. After escaping the temple, Dark returns to the Predator ship and his ancient mask gives him data revealing the Aliens' homeworld. Development [ ] In December 2008, a article stated that had announced that an Aliens vs. Predator video game was being developed. This meant that Sega's other upcoming game,, would be pushed back so Aliens vs. Predator could be released first. It was later confirmed that was involved as one of the characters of the game, he plays Karl Bishop Weyland. Australian controversy [ ] An early build of the game was submitted for review to the OFLC, but was denied classification in Australia in 2009 and effectively banned for sale altogether. Sega announced that there would not be a re-cut version released in Australia, and that it would appeal the decision. The game's refusal of classification again brought up the issue of a need for an R18+ rating in games, a move supported by many members of the public and government members. On December 18, 2009, Sega won the appeal on the classification of the game in Australia. 'It is with great pleasure that we announce the success of our appeal,' says Darren Macbeth, managing director of Sega Australia. 'We are particularly proud that the game will be released in its original entirety, with no content altered or removed whatsoever. Australian gamers applaud the Classification Review Board on making a decision that clearly considers the context of the game, and is in line with the modern expectations of reasonable Australians.' The Board noted that 'the violence depicted in the game can be accommodated within the MA 15+ category as the violent scenes are not prolonged and are interspersed with longer non-violent sequences. The violence is fantastical in nature and justified by the context of the game, set in a futuristic science-fiction world, inhabited by aliens and predators. This context serves to lessen its impact. The more contentious violence is randomly generated and is not dependent on player selection of specific moves.' Downloadable content [ ] Two additional map packs have been released for purchase via, and the entitled Swarm and Bughunt. [ ] The Swarm Map Pack and Bughunt Map Pack were respectively released on March 19, 2010 and July 9, 2010. Both downloads provide new multiplayer maps and survivor maps. Praised the game for its 'superb atmosphere' and 'unique multiplayer', but criticized the odd melee system and how the marines could knock back an alien, relieving some of the atmosphere. The most scathing review came from, who found the multiplayer hard to recommend over the prior game in the series,, describing it as 'ultimately thin and awkward'. 's Dakota Grabowski said: 'If the recent films on the Aliens vs. Predator franchise haven’t been painful enough to sit through, then perhaps video gamers worldwide are ready to stomach Sega and Rebellion’s pitiful offering. Delivering poor results and half-baked ideas, it’s my regret to call Aliens vs. Predator the year’s most disappointing title thus far.' 411Mania gave the PlayStation 3 version a score of 7.9 out of 10 and called it 'a solid game with its fair share of problems. For fans of the franchise, you’ll be able to look over the blemishes and find a game that you’ll be playing for months. For those that aren’t into the Aliens vs. Predator franchise, well, what the hell is wrong with you? Good or bad, I think we can all agree on one thing: This is the greatest game ever made where you can pull a guy’s spine out while he screams for mercy.' However, gave the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions a score of six out of ten and said that the game 'lacks the action set pieces that helped to push the FPS genre to where it is today.' Gave the Xbox 360 version a C and said, 'The always-terrific Lance Henriksen is on hand to put a human face on—and lend some soul to—this otherwise soulless experience. Yet in the end, his character turns out to be just as hollow as the videogame he’s starring in.' Gave the game five out of ten and called it 'a hastily assembled three-in-one anachronism which proves just one thing: that terrifying and terrible are not mutually exclusive.' Sales [ ] Despite its mixed critical reception, Aliens vs. Predator debuted at number one on the UK all formats chart. It was the fastest-selling game of 2010 in the UK, breaking the record previously held. It was also the best-selling game on, as well as on the retail PC charts. As of May 14, 2010, Aliens vs. Predator had sold over 1.69 million copies worldwide. The game has grossed £14 million in the UK alone previously making it the highest grossing game of all time. • IGN staff (December 22, 2009)... The series ran from November to October. The series was written by, drawn by, and digitally inked by Jamie Grant. DC claimed that this series would 'strip down the Man of Steel to his timeless, essential elements'. The series was the second to be launched in 2005 under DC's, the first being. These series were attempts by DC to allow major comics creators a chance to tell stories showcasing these characters without being restricted. Contents • • • • • • • • • Publication history [ ] Grant Morrison's approach to writing this series was to make the reading as universal as possible. He stated that he wasn't interested in 're-doing origin stories or unpacking classic narratives' but instead wanted to do 'a total update, rehaul and refit'. However, rather than just creating a 'fresh and relevant' update for new readers, Morrison wanted to write a 'collection of ‘timeless’ Superman issues'. The origins of this lie in a revamp of Superman, Superman Now, which began when Morrison and editor were unsuccessfully brainstorming ideas for a new take on the character outside the, when they had a ' encounter with a man dressed as Superman which helped spark the creative process and inspired the cover to the first issue. Morrison states in an interview: 'He was perched with one knee drawn up, chin resting on his arms. He looked totally relaxed. And I suddenly realized this was how Superman would sit. He wouldn't puff out his chest or posture heroically, he would be totally chilled. If nothing can hurt you, you can afford to be cool. A man like Superman would never have to tense against the cold; never have to flinch in the face of a blow. He would be completely laid back, un-tense. With this image of Superman relaxing on a cloud looking out for us all in my head, I rushed back to my hotel room and filled dozens of pages of my notebook with notes and drawings.' The ideas generated by that meeting were refined and pitched to DC in 1998 by Morrison,, and. They picked up on the fifteen-year cycle of reboots to the character, the previous one being 's, and suggested a new approach: The Superman relaunch we’re selling bucks the trend of sweeping aside the work done by those who came immediately before. Unlike the ‘cosmic reset’ revamps all too prevalent in current comics, our New Superman approach is an honest attempt to synthesize the best of all previous eras. Our intention is to honor each of Superman’s various interpretations and to use internal story logic as our launching pad for a re-imagined, streamlined 21st century Man of Steel. The ‘cosmic reset’ notion has been replaced by a policy of ‘include and transcend’ with regard to past continuity. Our intention is to restore Superman to his pre-eminent place as the greatest super-hero of all. Although initially greenlit, it was eventually turned down and Morrison said, 'I didn’t expect to be doing any further work on Superman' but the chance came as he was finishing his run on. In an interview with Matt Brady from, Grant Morrison stated he was contacted by DC Vice President and asked 'if I'd like to come back to DC to work on a Superman project with an artist of my choice'. He mentioned it worked out well since he was also planning to return to DC 'to do the project and the books'. Morrison has confirmed that he made use of some of his Superman Now ideas for All-Star Superman, like 'Luthor’s heart-stopping moment of understanding,' as well as drawing on his original proposal for elements later included in the storyline. In his writing of the character Superman, Morrison identifies different aspects of his personality, stating, 'Superman' is an act. 'Clark Kent' in Metropolis is also an act. There are actually two Kents, at least – one is a disguise, a bumbling, awkward mask for Superman. The other is the confident, strong, good-hearted Clark Kent who was raised by his surrogate Ma and Pa in Kansas and knows how to drive a tractor. I think he's the most 'real' of all.' As the series drew to a close, writer Grant Morrison conceived of a series of one-shot specials, loose in continuity from the original series, that would depict or pay tribute to the Superman, the team, the Superman Squad, the, and the. Publisher has stated that are no current plans for the specials. Morrison would later become involved as writer on a where he used his ideas about the Golden Age Superman. Kal-El himself would one day emerge from his seclusion: he was seen once from countless thousands of years in the future, having evolved into a sort of, meeting with his past self shortly after the death of Jonathan Kent and his masquerade as the Unknown Superman, and shortly before his own 'death'. The future Superman presented his dying past self with an indestructible golden flower from New Krypton, 'For him, from all of us. In remembrance of all that we are. And all that we will be.' The flower was planted at Jonathan Kent's grave. Reception [ ] The first issue was released in November 2005 and was a sales success, ranking second in the top 300 comics for that period, with Infinite Crisis #2 being the top seller. The second issue also ranked second in the top 300 comics for the January 2006 period, with pre-order sales of 124,328; Infinite Crisis #4 being the top seller that month. The series completed its run upon publication of its final issue in October 2008. Jeremy Estes, an early reviewer from, notes the difficulty in revamping the character Superman in his review of the first issue of the series. However, the All-Star continuity allowed the writer Grant Morrison much more writing freedom. Frank Quitely's art is praised as 'fresh and modern', while still 'evoking the classic hero known around the world'. At the time of writing only the first issue had been released, and so Estes was unsure of the direction of the story, noting the creative team 'have set up a promising tale, but only time will tell if they take the last train to Memphis or head West, all the way to Vegas'. Nicholas Labarre, writing for, argued that All-Star Superman 'confidently exploits the near omnipotence of the main character,' in contrast with other Superman stories. He compared the series favorably with Morrison's other work. Ed Mathews from PopImage reviewed the first collected, which collects the first six issues, and praised the creative team, stating the art is 'the most elegant work out of Frank Quitely I’ve seen to date'. Mathews also singled out Grant Morrison's, saying that the series adds to the Superman mythos 'by tweaking bits and parts from the character’s rich history just enough to make old concepts fresh again'. He recommended Volume 1 of the collected editions, and stated that ' All Star Superman sings a hit'. Another review of Volume 1 came from Danny Graydon of, who stated that Grant Morrison's writing is 'the most vigorously entertaining take on the 'Man of Steel' in decades' and that the 'nuanced artwork is to be savoured'. Magazine's ranked the graphic novel third in Top 10 Graphic Novels of 2007. He praised the storyline, noting that due to the character's strength and morality, he is a difficult character to write for. IGN.com's list of top 25 Superman stories ranked All-Star Superman number one on the top of the list, describing it as '. A loving and affectionate celebration of everything that Superman stands for.' The pop culture commentator praised the series suggesting that Grant Morrison had portrayed Superman as 'emotionally intelligent. Thoughtful' and 'compassionate'. I have to say this is the best Superman portrayal I've ever seen and a very emotional one too. I was left speechless at the end. This is how Superman is and should be. Towards the end, I was getting emotional. Just for that alone, I'm giving it a 5 out of 5. Now, some may complain that there were too many characters, but THAT'S HOW IT SHOULD BE! Were there beings like this in the world, that's probably how things would go. Also a really great portrayal of Superman as Clark Kent, and fun to see how he switches between the two in some scenes. The animation is well, done, though at times, I felt like the detail was a bit off, and if we were really to hit it home, the animation might've had more of an impact, but that's not taking away anything from the movie for me. Voices were also really well done, especially Superman's, because it makes him seem a lot more like a hero with the gentle, calm voice, and Luthor a vain intelligent evil man (as well as other characters who the read should find out for himself). The dialogue is EXCELLENTLY done! Very smart dialogue. Very characteristic of the character saying the dialogue. Absolutely great. The interaction between Superman and Lex Luthor when they did happen were also really well done and intriguing. Part of the emotional impact this movie had was the real feeling of heroism you felt from Superman - like I said, how Superman should be. And of course, the ending, which had so many things to it that were emotional, from pretty much every single character in the movie (like seriously! Even one of the robots!) So yeah, definite 5/5 from me and the best Superman movie I've ever seen so far. Why does he keep going back? • A woman is driving on a highway at 100 mph, and she cannot slow down. What does she do? More very low-level yet high-interest stories! These stories, selected from mainstream news sources, are humorous, poignant, astounding -- and all true! They are told as simply as possible -- exclusively in the present tense -- and all stories are less than ½ page long. All New Very Easy True Stories, by Sandra Heyer, is an ideal first text for students with little experience with English. It is a companion book to Very Easy True Stories, which is at the same level but features different stories and exercises. These two parallel readers give students the option of lingering at the low-beginning level. They can go back and forth between Very Easy True Stories and All New Very Easy True Stories, or they can complete first one book and then the other. Or teachers can use Very Easy True Stories one semester and All New Very Easy True Stories the next. That way, students who stay in a low-beginning class when their classmates move on to the next level can essentially repeat the class but with all new material. Combined, the two books offer 28 stories, giving teachers multiple opportunities to incorporate reading into their thematically-based instructional units. Features • First, students see a series of 18 captioned pictures that clarify the meaning of the sentences beneath the pictures. • Next, students read the story in text form for real reading practice. • Finally, students complete exercises following each story to develop basic reading skills as well as build pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary proficiency. It is for absolute beginners who are familiar with the Roman alphabet and have some experience reading words and sentences, as well as for students with well-developed speaking and listening skills but low-level literacy skills. It is a companion book to Very Easy True Stories; that is, it is written at the same reading level and has the same format. However, as the title indicates, it has all new stories and exercises. PURPOSE Why does the True Stories series offer two first readers? First, some students need more time at the introductory level before moving on to Easy True Stories and All New Easy True Stories, the next books in the series. This is particularly true for students with only basic literacy skills in their native languages. All New Very Easy True Stories gives students the option of lingering a while at this level. They can go back and forth between Very Easy True Stories and All New Very Easy True Stories, or they can complete first one book and then the other. (Students can read either book first.) Second, many teachers like to incorporate reading into their thematically-based instructional units. The story 'The Parking Ticket,' for example, adds dimension to a unit on traffic signs, and the 'Wrong Number' complements a unit on phone etiquette. With twenty-eight low-level stories, teachers have multiple opportunities to match readings with other classroom activities. Third, a choice of two books helps veteran teachers keep their lessons fresh: They can use Very Easy True Stories one semester and All New Very Easy True Stories the next. Alternating between the two books also keeps the lessons fresh for students who choose to stay in an introductory class when their classmates move on to the next level. They can essentially repeat the class but with all new material. Very Easy True Stories and All New Very Easy True Stories can also be used in higher-level classes as the basis of a cooperative reading/speaking/listening activity. One group of students reads a story in one book while another group reads a story in the other book. Then, in pairs, students from one group tell their story to students from the other group, using the drawings as cues as they retell the story. DESCRIPTION All New Very Easy True Stories contains 14 units, each centered on a story that was adapted from a newspaper article and written in the simplest, most concrete language possible. In answer to those students who think that some stories are too amazing to be true: Yes, the stories are true, to the best of our knowledge. The two girls really did use a blanket to catch the boy who fell from a window, and customers waiting in line at a store really did chip in to buy the toy for the woman who had lost her money. In the back of the book, you will find a special To the Teacher section with more information about each story. HOW TO USE ALL NEW VERY EASY TRUE STORIES Each unit is divided into three sections: Pre-Reading, Reading, and Post-Reading Exercises. Following are some suggestions for using each of the sections. Teachers new to the field might find these suggestions especially helpful. Please keep in mind that these are only suggestions. Teachers should, of course, feel free to adapt these strategies to best suit their teaching styles and their students' learning styles. PRE-READING You might want to introduce each unit by acquainting (or reacquainting) students with key words in the story. Most of the nouns in the stories are concrete objects (vegetables, house, car), and most of the verbs are simple actions (sit, swim, drive), so you can easily clarify meaning by drawing pictures, by showing photos or realia, or by acting out words. (If students have difficulty differentiating between common and proper nouns, treat the names of people in the stories as new vocabulary. Draw a simple figure on the board, write the person's name beneath it, and say, for example, 'His name is Genesio.' ) When you are satisfied that students know the key words, proceed to the pre-reading drawing, which introduces the theme of the story and prompts students to recall knowledge and experiences related to the theme. Here is one possible sequence of steps for using the pre-reading drawing. With the help of the pre-reading drawing, elicit the vocabulary of the story. Ask students to turn to the pre-reading drawing in their books. (Or make a transparency of the pre-reading page, and show it on the overhead projector.) Ask students, 'What do you see?' Write their responses on the board, on flash cards, or directly on the transparency. (Some teachers advocate printing in block letters, rather than in upper- and lowercase letters, since block printing is easier for students to copy.) As you write, say the words slowly to model correct pronunciation. Students copy the words onto the picture in their books. If all the students are absolute beginners, it is unlikely they will be able to supply the vocabulary for the pre-reading drawing. Instead of asking students, 'What do you see?' Begin by simply labeling the items and actions depicted in the drawing and slowly pronouncing the words. Say only five or six words. That's plenty for beginners. Resist the inclination to talk to yourself as you label ('Let's see.and over here there's a.' Tell students what the story is about. Point to the title of the story, and read it aloud slowly. Then connect the vocabulary of the pre-reading drawing to the title. For example, say, 'This story is about a custodian.' (Point to the man in the drawing.) 'His name is Genesio.' (Point to the word 'Genesio' in the title.) As students progress through the book, try to stop at 'This story is about.' And see if students can use the pre-reading drawing and the title of the story to make predictions about the story. Teaching Absolute Beginners All New Very Easy True Stories was field-tested in several ESL environments. One of those environments was a class of zero-level adult learners, all native speakers of Spanish. Before beginning Unit 1, the teacher told his students--in Spanish--that they were going to hear and read a story. He told his students not to worry about understanding every word, but to try to get the gist of the story. He said that in the course of reading the story, maybe they'd learn a couple of new words, and that would be great! Those few words in Spanish instantly changed the atmosphere in the classroom: The students went from looking apprehensive to looking relaxed. Their goal had changed from the impossible to the possible--instead of trying to understand every word, they were just going to enjoy the story and maybe pick up a few new words (a goal they did, in fact, accomplish). If you have absolute beginners in your class, it is well worth the effort to find people--more advanced students in the same class, perhaps, or in another class in your program--to make a similar announcement in your students' native languages. When you do find native speakers to make the announcement, consider asking them to write it for you so you'll be able to encourage future students in their native languages. READING Following is one possible sequence of steps in reading the story: 1. Read the story aloud to the students. Ask students to turn to the second and third pages of the unit, which are in comic-strip format. (Or make transparencies of these pages and show them on the overhead projector.) Tell students to look at just the drawings for now, not at the words beneath the drawings. The purpose of this first reading is to give students a global, not a word-for-word, understanding of the story. Read the story aloud as students look at the drawings. Begin by saying 'Number one,' and slowly read the sentence that the first drawing illustrates. Then say 'Number two,' and read the appropriate sentence. Continue in this manner. Saying the numbers of the pictures while telling the story ensures that all eyes are on the same picture. If your students are absolute beginners, you might need to reduce the story to its most basic elements when you tell it the first time. In Unit 1, for example, instead of reading the story exactly as it is written ('He doesn't buy new clothes. He wears old clothes'), you might say, 'New clothes? You will probably want to walk away from the pictures from time to time and act out some scenes, perhaps with the help of props, or you might want to act out the entire story, if it has plenty of action. (The teacher who field-tested 'An Expensive Vacation' came to class with a ski jacket, a lighter, a few pieces of wood, and bills in one-, five-, ten-, and twenty-dollar denominations. By the time the teacher 'burned' the $10, all eyes were riveted on the scene.) Some of the stories build suspense. You might stop short of the last few sentences when reading those stories aloud and let students--silently--read how the story ends. Read the story a second time. This time, however, instruct students to look at the words beneath the pictures. During subsequent readings, you might wish to call students' attention to basic grammatical structures, not by giving lengthy explanations, but by reminding students of rules they have already learned. (For example, after reading the sentence 'He goes to free concerts in the park,' say, 'I go, you go, they go, we go, she goes, he goes.' Give students time to read the story silently. Some students will be ready to go to the fourth page and read the story in text form. Other students will need to read the story in comic-strip format so that they can go back and forth between the words and the pictures to check their understanding. Present the story in a different way. If students have a global understanding of the story but need practice mastering its language, you might try one of these activities: -Read the story aloud, but this time, make 'mistakes.' ('Genesio is a mechanic. He works at a garage. He cleans the cars.' ) Pause after each sentence, letting students speak in chorus to correct the mistake, rather than calling on individuals. A variation of this technique is to make mistakes in only some of the sentences. Students say 'Yes' if the sentence is correct, 'No' if it isn't. (Some teachers like to give each student two differently colored index cards. On one card 'YES' is printed; on the other card 'NO' is printed. After hearing each sentence, students hold up the card with their answers.) -Read the story aloud, sentence by sentence, and ask the entire class to repeat, echoing your pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm. -Read sentences from the story at random. Students call out the number of the corresponding picture. -Say key words in the story. Students scan to find the words and circle them; they can verify their work by checking with a partner. Teaching Young Students If you teach young students, you may need to use one of the four activities above instead of, not in addition to, having students read the story on their own. Adults understand that looking at the pictures while hearing the story is a helpful pre-reading step; children see it as an end unto itself. Middle school students who participated in field-testing material were somewhat puzzled by the teacher's request that they read the story silently. They had just heard the story, and they knew how it ended. Why would they want to read it? When, however, reading the story was made into a game, they were enthusiastic readers. They especially liked identifying mistakes in the teacher's version of the story and scanning for key words (an activity that they turned into a race to see who could find the words first). THE POST-READING EXERCISES Pronunciation The exercise section begins with an activity that helps students correlate English letters with the sounds they represent. Some units focus on vowel sounds, others on consonant sounds. In the course of the book, the pronunciation activity acquaints students with twelve vowel sounds and sixteen consonant sounds. Exercises that highlight vowel sounds group words in the story according to their accented vowel sound. Students, especially those whose first language is phonetic, are usually surprised to discover that the five English vowels make more than five sounds. The purpose of the exercise is simply to make students aware that these sounds exist in English, not to drill students into pronouncing the sounds perfectly. (In fact, doing so would probably be a disservice. Keep in mind that some vowels make one sound when they are stressed, as they are in the exercise, but change to the neutral vowel [schwa] when they are in an unstressed position. Consider how the pronunciation of the 'a' in 'and' changes when 'and' is put in an unstressed position: 'cream and sugar.' ) If your students have high-level speaking skills, you might pause after each column of words and ask, 'Do you know other words with this sound?' Write their contributions on the board. Spelling This exercise is a dictation exercise. For absolute beginners, write the words on the board so that they can copy them. More advanced students like to work this exercise like a puzzle, trying to figure out the word from the letters given and announcing it before the teacher can say it. Comprehension Students can complete these exercises individually, in pairs, in small groups, or with the whole class. The exercises can be completed in class or assigned as homework. At the back of the book there is an answer key to the exercises. Note that many of the exercises not only test comprehension but subtly call students' attention to English syntax. For example, an exercise that asks students to match the first half of a compound sentence ('Ann steps on the brake') with the second half ('her car goes faster') also makes students aware that the word and often connects two parts of a compound sentence. Speaking and Writing These exercises personalize the themes of the stories. They are written at a level parallel to that of the readings; that is, they assume that students speak and write about as well as they read. As a result, these exercises rarely introduce new vocabulary; the vocabulary consists of words recycled from the story. If, however, your students are fairly proficient speakers, you will probably want to encourage them to talk about the stories, asking them, for example, if they, like Ann, have ever had trouble with a car's brakes, or if they, like Ken Walker, have ever gotten help from someone on the Internet. You could let the discussion lead into a writing activity, using the Language Experience Approach. Briefly, the Language Experience Approach consists of these steps: 1. The student orally relates a story or experience. The teacher writes the student's words (sitting next to the student so the student can see what is being written). The teacher reads the story. The student reads the story. Keep in mind that the first step in the Language Experience Approach is an oral one. If your students are zero-level speakers of English, you will not want to venture from the controlled speaking exercises in the book. Students in a beginning ESL class can have a wide range of experience with English, as you may know only too well. Some students are at zero-level in all the skills areas--reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Other students may have well- developed speaking and listening skills, but low-level literacy skills. Another group may have studied English in their native countries, perhaps for years, and are fairly proficient readers and writers, but were placed in a beginning class because they are unable to speak or understand spoken English. So, you may have to tamper with the exercises--to adjust them up or down, to skip some, or to add some of your own. Both the exercises and reading selections are intended to build students' confidence along with their reading skills. Above all, it is hoped that reading All New Very Easy True Stories will be a pleasure, for both you and your students. All New Very Easy True Stories and Very Easy True Stories are the first books in the True Stories reading series. They are followed by Easy True Stories, All New Easy True Stories, True Stories in the News, More True Stories, Even More True Stories, and Beyond True Stories. Unless you play it on a 486, the game is totally off on speed. In Dosbox, its impossible to set the correct amount of cycles because some parts will be jerky while others will be super fast. Question with these kind of errors is always: is it a bug in the game or in Dosbox? I've known quite a few games that crashed because of a bug that crept into the savegame file. But you're right, this game's really difficult to get working. I acctounally wouldn't mind setting a regular configuration, and one configuration with a really high number of cycles, that's the first thing that I tried, D-fend uses 20,000 as the default max (though it lets you go higher than that), so I didn't try running any higher. I'll try reinstalling, hopefully it will fix the problem, it seems like the best solution with the least amount of work that might actually work. Thanks for the tips, red_avatar Edit: Sorry, none of these worked 100%. I tried all the cores, and cycles 40,000, 80,000, and 200,000. Not even reinstalling helped, so I'm worried it probably is a corrupt savefile. Though the game works besides that so far. I'm gunna try to see if this part of the game has a way to get through it without having to talk to anyone on the screen. I'm also thinking that possibly it crashes at random. Alien Logic: A Skyrealms of Jorune Adventure, a DOS based RPG published in 1994, is based in the Skyrealms game-universe. I was able to talk to one of the Cleash, who gave the info I needed away, but as soon as the fight scene started (which was unevitable, because it was the only option), the game crashed. Another time, I was fully capable of interrogating an artifact hunter that was on the screen. But when I tried again and no luck. The crash is simply that the game uses the hourglass cursor, appears frozen, and if you press any key on the keyboard, the game boots you out of DOSBox. Newbie Posts: 25 Joined: 2005-7-21 @ 01:13. Thanks for all the possibilities and responces, guys. I'm sorry I hadn't replied in such a long while. Anyways, I've tried both the patch and the updated DOS4GW extender (thanks, eL_PuSHeR and richard.broadhurst). But I didn't get any result form them. I maintain that the problem is a deal of 'too many sprites on one screen' therefore possibly dealing with RAM, explaining the slowness. Then the locking up and exitting might be just that the computer can't deal with the switch from hundreds of sprites to just one or two (for the close-up of the Cleash or artifact hunter talking), not sure if letters count. So it might not be something that either could take care of. --- Richard, I just use the Wizard on D-Fend and edit a few things. Type: Name: Alien Logic Game File: C: ALIEN ALIEN.EXE Setup: D: INSTALL.EXE Default on everything else. Then I use the profile editor to change a few things: General -> Resolution: 640x480 Environment -> Cyles: 7250 Mounting -> Edit D: -> Mount Type: CDROM, check Enable I/O control. Then I go to the folder where D-Fend keeps it's confs (normally C: D-fend Confs), copy Alien Logic.conf to my Alien Logic DOSBOX folder (C: Alien DOSBOX), rename the conf file to dosbox.conf. Copy dosbox.exe, libogg-0.dll, libvorbis-0.dll, libvorbisfile-3.dll, SDL.dll, and SDL_net.dll to that folder too. Use notepad to change a few things. - Change captures to 'captures=capture' - Change the info after the mountings to: cd C: ALIEN C: ALIEN.EXE exit Create Shortcut of DOSBOX.EXE, rename to 'SkyRealms of Jorune - Alien Logic' and paste into the right folder in the start menu. If you want an exact copy of the conf, I could make it for you later and attach to the topic. Newbie Posts: 25 Joined: 2005-7-21 @ 01:13. Hello, Not sure if anyone ever got this fix. But I found this information on a Walkthrough site. Do not - repeat, DO NOT!! - visit the ruins at 214,187 (the Crossroads) until Salrough tells you about them. If you explore these ruins before he tells you about them, the game will crash later on when you try talking to the Cleash general. This is fatal, as you must speak to him to set other events further in the game. So stay away until you hear of them from Salrough. Newbie Posts: 1 Joined: 2008-3-13 @ 18:51. Thanks Devonicus. I already knew that but thanks for the reminder. The game's pretty non-linear, through the right sequence of events and cheats, it's pretty easy to shave a few days of work from the game (I don't suggest it though, because like you said, there's at least that bug and it gets rid of the fun really. It's best just to do things as Salrough tells you because getting lost is pretty easy in this game.) I do have a theory that it's actually the rending method that is messing up the game and not the speed. My supporting statement is 'If DOS can do it, why not DOSBox?' Because I have a firm belief that DOSBox is like DOS+, but anyways, I'm gunna try to set the rendering to DirectDraw, it helped with a problem where the palette got messed up, it will probably help with this. Wish me luck guys P.S: I haven't had the time to actually use the computer and won't get to try it until I get better because I messed up my leg. Newbie Posts: 25 Joined: 2005-7-21 @ 01:13. Thank youHello, thank you for responding The mount that I use, I mostly generated using the original D-Fend, but I might've tweaked it a bit too (not sure). The full game will feature the three-part single player campaign, where you can play as an Alien, Predator or a human Marine. This demo allows you to try a multiplayer game - deathmatch - with seven other players online. You can choose your species, though there's only one game type and one map. Deathmatch isn't really the best game mode for Aliens Vs Predator, as having everyone against everyone means death comes too quickly for newcomers! The first game was tense and scary - Aliens Vs Predator in the 21st century is no different. It's dark, atmospheric and extremely gory. Controls are typical for a first person shooter, so it's easy to pick up. With the graphics settings high, it will need a powerful PC to run smoothly, but it looks good on low texture too. The sound is great, really making you feel tense. It's not a comfortable experience, so if you're easily scared, keep clear of this! It's also worth mentioning that this is a pretty gruesome game, and definitely not for kids. This demo is quire limited, but give you a good feel for the tension and horror of the full release. |
